What is Self-Regulation?
Recommended for grades 4-8
DEFINITION OF SELF-REGULATION:
A self-directed process of attaining goals, learning skills, accomplishing tasks, and managing behaviours.
Assign students into groups, and role play. Come up with some examples of what SELF-REGULATION looks like in different situations, including getting angry, studying for a test, and doing what your asked from a teacher/parent. Ask students two pick two categories from the following, and for each category come up with 3-4 strategies in which they can SELF-REGULATE to achieve their goals:
1. Achieving a goal (saving money, making new friends)
2. Learning a skill (sports, academic, language, social)
3. Managing Behaviours (not getting upset/nervous)

Gather students in a circle to discuss strategies in an open-forum format.
Consolidating: Poster/PSA
Recommended for grades 4-8
Students can create a poster or public service announcement depicting a possible goal or issue, and a self-regulating strategy that accompanies that particular goal.
